A Destination for Research
Since 2000, our practice has actively pursued new and optimal treatments for a host of eye diseases, while continuing to educate our providers and patients. To accomplish these goals, we place a great value on research, leading and participating in multiple clinical trials, including those for such retinal conditions as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, and retinal vein occlusion (RVO).
This has resulted in such achievements as our physicians being among the first to use intravitreal antiangiogenics to treat retinal diseases. Our four Clinical Trial Centers, located in Ladson, Beaufort, Mount Pleasant, and West Ashley, boast cutting-edge technology, allowing us to take part in advanced, global retina trials. And we encourage retinal patients throughout South Carolina and beyond to participate in these clinical trials.
Through our research approach, we’ve been able to train numerous international fellows. Our research fellowship offers young physicians the opportunity to experience clinical trials, one-on-one interaction with attending physicians, and surgical observation, as well as the chance to publish clinical articles and book chapters. Thanks to our patients’ generosity, we also provide an academic scholarship for those qualified.
